Dependent Child COBRA Eligibility

This article explains the COBRA eligibility rules for dependent children who lose coverage under the Plan.

Dependent children are eligible for COBRA as follows:

COBRA Coverage Duration

Death of the enrollee

Up to 36 months, unless eligible as a dependent of a surviving spouse

Employee's employment termination (not due to gross misconduct) or hours reduction

Up to 18 months

Parent's active military duty

Up to 24 months

Parent's divorce or legal separation, or COBRA participant becomes Medicare-eligible, or no longer an eligible dependent

Up to 36 months

If another qualifying event occurs during an 18-month coverage period, the extension can last up to a total of 36 months.
